How Big is Your Cup?

Everyone has heard the stories of lottery winners who receive large sums of money only to find themselves broke within a few years. . . Or the stories of star athletes who come into financial resources and stardom at a young age and later end up in legal trouble battling severe addictions and emotional issues.

It’s easy to say, “Oh those folks were just messed up. That would never happen to me!” You know what? They said that too. But the truth is: Their abundance cup was too small. It couldn’t hold all that was poured in. These people weren’t equipped to handle an influx of abundance, so when it did come in, there was no room for it to stay. It just splashed out on the ground and was gone. Are you equipped to handle abundance? How big is your cup?

Here are 2 quick shifts to expand your Abundance Cup…

1. Know that Abundance is Your Responsibility

It’s no mistake that you love what you love. It’s no mistake that you’re good at the things you’re good at. The Universe as a whole wants you – in fact, NEEDS you – to be open to abundance because when you receive that abundance, you also receive the strength and the space in order to give your own gifts back to the world.

No one else has your unique combination of talents, skills, abilities, knowledge, physical attributes, likes, dislikes, or quirks. This makes you uniquely designed to contribute something to the world (you may define “world” according to your own scale. “World” could mean “family” or it could mean, “globe”).

When you’re not open to receiving, you can’t contribute. Your energy and enthusiasm gets jammed up like a clog in the pipes. It’s only by receiving that you can continue to give. Whether we’re talking about health, relationships, financial abundance, spiritual happiness or any other form of joy, it is your responsibility to be open to receiving abundance SO THAT you can continue to give it.

2. Turn the Potter’s Wheel: How to make a bigger cup

Every blessing contains a problem, and every problem contains a blessing. Only by turning the wheel from blessing to problem to blessing can you increase the size of your Abundance Cup.

Choose just one particular area of your life in which to focus, especially if this is a new concept for you. Maybe you want to focus on bringing abundance into your job or your health or your financial situation. Choose your area, and ask yourself, “What is it that I would really like to receive immediately?”

In this case, don’t bother to go deep. If you could have anything you wanted RIGHT NOW, what would it be? Just see what answer falls out (For purposes of illustration maybe what you really want right now is a great cup of coffee).

Once you have your answer, ask yourself, “Hmm. If I received that right now, what problem would also come with it?”

I don’t care how wonderful “it” may be, every new thing that comes into your life also comes with a test (I think that’s how they decide whether you get to keep the new thing or not: whether you pass the test!). (In the coffee example, what is your next problem? You need a place on your desk to put it. You need time to drink it. Maybe you now need sugar or cream…or a sleeping pill tonight because you drank it too late in the day.)

Identify what problem will arise, and begin to solve it. Take a step toward fixing that problem. Curiously, when you do that, you’re making space for abundance to come in. (This step is not to be confused with “worrying about problems you don’t have.” Rather this is about “how do I make receiving this blessing even easier?”)

Now let’s look at a work example, if you were to be promoted to the office director’s job right now, problems that might arise are: you don’t know exactly what the goals of the office are, or you don’t know how that position is measured. You may have to work longer hours, which means you could no longer pick up your kids from school. Or maybe it’s as simple as the colleague with whom you don’t get along is now working under you and you have to find a way to make the relationship workable because you need her to get work done on your behalf. Or is it something else?

This week, identify the problem that would arise if you got exactly what you wanted right now. Take a step toward solving that problem and expand your cup to receive what you want.
