Looking at work with a joyful heart

I like to look for quotes that help me set my focus in a new direction. Recently, I posted this one on my office door:

“Service which is rendered without joy helps neither the servant nor the served. But all other pleasures and possessions pale into nothingness before service which is rendered in a spirit of joy.”

Mahatma Gandhi

So I’m focusing on joy…joy that I find in helping my coworkers, joy when I see an attendee in one of my Microsoft Access classes really “get it”, joy when I patiently wait my turn to get out of the parking garage on my way to a meeting, joy when I’m given something else to add to my task list.

My new vision has brought me back to the roots of my committment to public service. I’m here because my contribution is making a difference, and because I continually seek new ways to improve my service and the human condition.

If the workload is getting you down, focus on joy today.

Kindly,

Sandy

The was a very valuable post for me today. It seems that the basic perception we chose to have can frame our life. For years I had the lyrics below from John Denver framed on my office wall. Life is such as it is, and we chose each day how to live it. Thank you for the post.

All this joy, all this sorrow
All this promise, all this pain
Such is life, such is being
Such is spirit, such is love

City of joy, city of sorrow
City of promise, city of pain
Such is life, such is being
Such is spirit, such is love

World of joy, world of sorrow
World of promise, world of pain
Such is life, such is being
Such is spirit, such is love

All this joy, all this sorrow
All this promise, all this pain
Such is life, such is being
Such is spirit, such is love

Such is spirit, such is love
