Online Tutors – The Future of Volunteering to Make a Difference

DC Public Schools has partnered with Innovations in Learning to offer a unique volunteer tutoriing opportunity. You can help a child learn to read in only 30 minutes a week without ever leaving your desk!

If you’ve always wanted to volunteer in a meaningful and hassle-free way, but could never find the time, this may be the perfect solution for you. As an Online Tutor, all you’ll need is a computer with an Internet connection, a telephone, and 30 minutes once a week, during typical school day hours. This volunteer program is very flexible. You can tutor if traveling or while at home.

There is no prior teaching experience necessary, and a short training webinar will provide you with all the skills and information you need to successfully tutor your student. Kids who don’t read at grade level by 3rd grade typically have problematic outcomes throughout their school careers. So please join your colleagues in making a true difference in the education of early readers in disadvantaged schools, who are clearly at-risk in our fast paced world!

Ready to make a difference? Contact Hilah Culman with DCPS at [email protected] to get your agency involved. This program is available only in Washington, DC and Chicago, but may someday be a nationwide, I’m hoping.

P.S. I can attest to the fact that reading is everything for a child – so important. We try to read to my 22-month old son 15-20 minutes a day…and have since he was really little. He loves it and he’s way ahead in language skills, which I attribute to all the time we’ve spent with books.

Do you have a link to more information about the program, Terry?

Here is the link for more information:

http://www.innovationsforlearning.org/tutor_program.php. You can certainly tutor from any location in the US. At the end of the year, you will get a chance to meet your assigned pupil at a party for all tutors. There are some videos about the program at this website.

If you want to join the DHS team, you are welcome to do so. Just let me know. To sign up, go to

http://oms.innovationsforlearning.org/tutorsignup.php and select “Dept of Homeland Security” in the pull-down list. We can make you an honorary member of our team. We need all tutors to sign up soon because we only have about 4 months left in the school year. I signed up!

This is interesting. I’ve been a college instructor and a tutor for Korean kids though not online. But this is for a good cause. I am sure there are online tutors out there who would also help if they learn about this.
