20% Harvard for Teach for America, Why Not Govt Jobs?

Great article in NY Times on rise of Teach for America and how it is super competitive and everyone wants in.  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/12/education/12winerip.html?scp=2&am...

I still dont know why governments are leveraging these lessons learned for recruiting the best and brightest.  Gen Y out of college really want to give back and do more than just work for a company.

Teach for America has made it a clear option with a great brand, a clear process, and great alumni network.

PMF and agencies should be paying attention (and I know some are)...the lessons are right here.  and the opportunity is ripe.

I agree. I'm a medical anthropologist working for the NIH. This is not a traditional role for an anthropologist. I speak at anthropology conferences and mentor studens trying to convince them that public service is a noble and effective way to practice anthropology. At first, hardly anyone wanted to hear me, especially my academic colleagues. Lately however, I've been hearing more interest. If only the gov.t had a coordinated way beyond management interns, etc. to bring these new folks in. They'd be coming in at the master's and doctoral level. I see public service as a great way to use anthropology (and social work-another degree of mine). Probably this could be argued for numerous disciplines.

Couldn't agree more! City Hall Fellows (www.cityhallfellows.org) gives local governments the means to do exactly this.
