Broader Context of Open Gov (RE: April OGD Workshop @ USDA)

(This question is part of the online participation effort leading up to the April 28th Open Government Directive Workshop at the USDA.  Links to other questions in this dialogue are at the bottom of this page.)

This question was submitted by one of the workshop participants:

  • How does open gov fit in with other initiatives?  Should agencies get credit on open gov dashboard for doing actions that the agencies are already doing or have done for another purpose?
  • If "no," then what resources are available to implement open gov goals and objectives?

One context is as part of the movement towards openness and another is a move to eSociety. Some leaders in Open Gov are also working more broadly for OpenDemocracy, eSociety etc. They share some of the same vision and are doing common things.

BTW, Bill Bradley’s definition of a movement is helpful to understand the movement made up of three elements:

1. a narrative that tells a story about the group and the vusion it has and is trying to build (we see some of this on GovLoop);
2. a connection between and among the concept leaders and the movement members/followers; and
3. something to do
