GovLoop - Social Network for Government

How different is Government from Large Scale Private Industry?

Is there a difference between Government & Large Scale Industry? 'Intent of existence' could easily pass as a differentiation but that seems hardly enough to believe that Governments are not for Profit Organizations trying to sell their brand to citizens and the world outside.

I could spot some similarities:

1. Governments sell Services to Citizens. So do large companies.
2. Governments sell Leadership to Citizens (Democratic ones). So do large companies.
3. Governments are composed of Management just like in Large Corporations
4. Governments too have a P&L statement & Balance Sheet to account for.
5. All Governments earn money or brand (w.r.t) trust by using their financial muscle.
6. Governments take biased decisions in favor of their majority customers (citizens) to get power
7. Governments do social service, Large corporations do social service.
8. Government focuses on acquiring Customers for different services, so do large companies.
9. Government depends on Vendors just like Biggest of Organizations
10. Government has competition from other Governments.

The only dissimilarities that I could sum up are about scale of operations (superset) and to an extent process of selection of the Chairman.

Can someone help me with more differences per se?

The customer can choose to patronize or boycott the large corporation or non profit and can ignore the policy directives of these organizations if they determine them to be misguided. They are required by law to obey government laws and regulations. They also usually have little choice regarding the use of government services. Most importantly, governments are authorized to use force, including deadly force, to enforce compliance. The best analogy I can think of would be if the Red Cross were authorized to impose taxes instead of ask for donations and imprison people who refused to pay up. Their basic mission might not change but they would be a much different organization.

Excellent response, Peter. Do you also see the world of Internet changing the degree of 'ruthlessness' available at disposal of Government officers? I mean does not Internet work like a mirror to the Government leaders (power & opposition both) and act like a preventive before taking brute force against the citizens?

How do you see it in future?

Also there is another uber-level view of it: Citizens are internal customers of Government, just like employees are inside n organization. The eco-system works in competition with other international organs i.e. Governments again..? Right.

Management has every right to screw, unscrew etc. Are we sure, that Governments have a right to 'kill its own citizens?'. I think not. At least not the democratically elected ones.
