GovLoop - Social Network for Government

In the last month, both U.S. Deputy CTOs resigned (Beth Noveck - Deputy CTO for Open Gov and Andrew McLaughlin - Deputy CTO for Tech Policy) to go back to academia (for Beth) and start-ups/teaching (for Andrew). NOTE: I've opened a forum to thank Beth here.

As such, two new U.S. Deputy CTOs are needed.  These are political appointee positions so it's likely that they will be Democratic, usually not career government, often come from the outside like academia or private sector

Who Do You Think Should be the Next Deputy CTOs?

My top 5:

-Andrew Hoppin - NY Senate CIO

-Dustin Haisler - former Manor, TX CIO

-Clay Johnson, former Blue State, Sunlight Foundation
-Bill Eggers, Deloitte, Author of Gov 2.0 original book

-Lena Trudeau, NAPA, co-founder Collaboration Project

Other ideas - Anil Dash, Carl Malamud, Matt Miszeweski (Microsoft), Jascha (former Blue State)

Promote internally - people like Eugene Huang, Peter Levin (VA), Todd Park

Leave Eugene at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ;)

...although he's still at OSTP. I don't think he needs another job right now.

Ha...consider Eugene taking off Mr. GovLoop's official list ;)
All of the people listed are excellent choices.  In my opinion, however, I would favor people like Todd Park and Bill Eggers, both with strong experience, understanding where we are today and clearly understanding how government is evolving to open government.

Perhaps Greg Elin:

How about someone who is an actual technologist rather than a policy wonk? And why is the job of the (Dep) CTO seemingly equated with IT (isn't that what the CIO mainly covers)? There are other kinds of technology... energy, biology, space... Would be nice if someone leapt off the pages of the MIT Technology Review rather than the Harvard Business Review, you know?

No specific names, I don't like to play that game. But it's interesting that all the suggestions for Dep CTO are basically of a Government 2.0 vein, which is fine, except that there's a lot of other stuff out there too. Maybe one of those to replace Beth but to replace Andrew I don't really see that as nec (the CTO is already knowledgeable on IT anyway). Would love to see a scientist, engineer... maybe a senior professor with real lab cred but also some time in DC with DOE, NIH, etc.

My two cents.

Good point - more of the traditional OSTP of scientists.  Maybe even a VC/entrepreneur in the energy/biology/space
Yes, we shouldn't forget that this is part of OSTP, an acronym I almost never see anymore
Excellent points
Those are all great names.  Thinking about Bryan Sivak, former CTO of DC as well.
