Thanks Tina...power, accountability and action are great anytime, but especially powerful now in building one's resilience and influence.

Coaching has the potential to create motivation and commitment not as a directive from the coach, but rather from the insights created by the client. Coaching competencies as outlined by the International Coach Federation (www.coachfederation.org) assist us to provide the client access to power, accountability, and action - a pretty good solution to "austere times".

Hello Coaching Group!  I am OPM's Leadership Coaching Program Director and would like to tap into this group's expertise in the field.  Specifically, how do you see coaching as a solution during these austere times?

Group members, I thought this may interest you. http://tinyurl.com/443nexl . The harsh reality is that the marketplace is not producing enough jobs despite government efforts. We must develop innovative strategies to bridge this gap. So what can be done to inspire employees and job seekers, increase employee morale and produce economic growth - Organizational Development interventions are a good place to start.

In her featured blog post, Doris Tirone offers her answer to an age-old question:

"True leaders are born into these roles; everyone does not have it in them to be an effective leader."

I believe that most clients prefer to have a leadership coach who has some experience in the same occupation, field, or industry. Of course, most books and professional training for coaches will proclaim that you do not need to have a similar background as your client, but most clients don't think that way. Also, the coach needs to maintain objectivity and some distance from the client's direct work environment; that's why internal coaching can be so tricky.

My advice to individuals looking for a coach: Find a coach who understands your world but who is not now directly a part of it.

Thank you for posting the piece by Marshall Goldsmith. His point about being a "coach as facilitator" instead of a "coach as expert" really stood out for me. Does this run contrary to the belief that leaders in industry or government want a coach with prior experience in the same field as the leaders being coached?
