Jeffrey Levy from the EPA has shared some of their lessons learned from crisis communications (Japanese earthquake and tsunami) in this blog post:

Thought you might like it and/or have something to add.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Part of the background to the question is that the Verizon contract that currently supports Live Meeting and WebEx is due to end in June. It will be replaced by Live Meeting as offered via the gEMS bundled Microsoft solution through the Department, which also brings us Outlook and Communicator. While that'll be the official solution, I'm sure all of us will be exposed to other products, good to know pros and cons, particularly for diverse purposes like use with large groups.

For the planning rule and Sacred Sites work, we've used Verizon's WebEx and Livemeeting quite successfully.  They support webcams, but I haven't made use of those because its just another wrinkle to deal with.  The CHD has some basic guidance for setting yourself up under the existing Verizon contract and accounts. I'll be working up a "Tech Tip/Lessons Learned" about our experiences with these large national/nation-wide projects   Should help too.

The Verizon meeting managers are great to work with if you have large groups.  We've run meetings of well over 500 callers with question queues, etc.  Here's a link to the CHD guidance (tells you Points of Contact too):

John, we've been using GoToWebinar which has capacity for 1000 participants. It has all sorts of bells and whistles. We use it with many other agencies. The Wildfire Lessons Learned Center at NAFRI in Tucson pioneered the agreement. John Able got us the deal. You can email him at john.able@firenet.gov because right now he's re-imaging his laptop. John knows more specifics about it than I do.

John, did you check out 'acrobat.com'?

Since the issue of technology was floated here, anybody care to chime in on good tools for webinars with external parties? With travel caps, there's loads of interest in electronic meetings. Our current solution for this is Live Meeting but is there something better out there based on feature set, ease of set up, and ease of use? Can any of these support webcams in addition to whiteboard sharing?

Am excited to get onboard with Sharepoint, took the agLearn training on Sunday and see a lot of value for coordinating and collaborating with others, calendar sharing and synch-ability with Outlook. Although the training was 2007 version, I hope that part of the software is updated so the synchronizing is easier. I see it as a possible replacement to our intranet site, or it could enhance the site with libraries that specific groups could control and share.

We have so many technology related changes in our present and near future that we could be discussing within this group.  The O drive and e-records, web migration, switch from Lotus to MS, etc.  I'm interested to know how the changes are playing out in different locations.  The successes, the challenges, hindsight observations, suggestions for those of us that haven't made the transition yet, etc.

And here's news for the group . . . Smokey Bear is now a govloop member.  Go friend him!

OK, it's been too long since anyone commented or made a post about new info, apps, websites, etc. Someone tell me what is next?

Facebook has plateaued but I have no doubt we need to use it in the FS, at least to the Region/Statio0n/Area level. I have no hope that USDA will ever agree to that, however. Do we work through partners? What about Tumblr or other platforms that bring in several accounts/profiles into one place?

And who decieded that the hot water faucet should be on the left?!

Jon, I contacted USDA - Twitter is shut off as well. Apparently this is a mistake that is part of another action USDA is taking and should be corrected. BTW I have a static IP that allows me access through the firewall to these types of sites, so I have access...oh joy!
