Does the US have a national dish? What do you think it should be?

I was leaning to Southern Fried Chicken, but the New Orleans' staples of Oyster Po' Boys or Red Beans and Rice come to mind too.

Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans or collards?
How about Ben Franklin's proposed U.S. national bird, the turkey?

Barbecue. Every region has their variant and claims it is the best.

Failing that - Chili.

How about hot dogs and hamburgers?
I was thinking barbecue as well, Bill. Just about every country has their way of cooking meat "low and slow," and have been for centuries, but the flavors and culture behind what we do here in the states is truly American.

Looking over the answers, I think Bar B Q, for Bill's reason, every region of the country seems to have it's own take.  Chili too, but the BBQ hits home, there are more restaurants dedicated to it.

I've had que at the Rendezvous and Interstate in Memphis, Stubb's and The Salt Lick in Austin, Pigman's in Kill Devil Hills, and chains like Red, Hot & Blue and Famous Dave's.  I'm partial to Pigman's Carolina version.  What are your favorites?

Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn in Owensboro, Kentucky.
