Steakhouses - Anyone?
So I am not a big steak eater, but when the mood strikes I want one and now!
Yes, I have been to the Outback, and Ray's the Steak - yes I put them in the same category. I have gone to Morton's and the Palm and can do without the New York attitude and ambiance.
I was however blown away by the J&G Steakhouse in the new Hotel Washington that was recently redone by the Starwood chain. All of the dishes have an Asian flair, which I thought would be overdone, but it was not. My dish - 5 Spice Rubbed Short Ribs was out of this world!
This is a place for a special occasion but well worth the investment.

I'll have to check out...Bern's is pretty famous in Tampa. A little overpriced but the secret is the bar menu - $11 steak sandwiche which is to die for...

Here is DC, I like the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse just North of Dupont Circle. While it is a chain, and the food is great (if pricey), there are two things about this particular location I like:
1) It is in several old row houses that have been converted. The atmosphere is very romantic and old school--not so much brass and shiney things that you find in a lot of the other steakhouses.
2) In DC you can bring your own wine. We usually bring a very nice bottle and offer a taste to the chef--that usually gets the corkage wavied, and has also gotten us dessert.

I used to be a steak eater. But I have been disappointed too many times by a $30.00 steak. But I have never been disappointed by a $10.00 hamburger. I keep it simple now

I think I am the opposite. I do not think that a $10 burger is ten times better than a $1 Mickey D's burger. But I think that a $30 Ruth's Chris steak is more than twice as good a $15 Outback steak. Perhaps that is just the economist in me trying to measure my utils! ;)

I haven't tried Shula's yet, but I have eaten at Fleming's (both around Tyson's Corner). Good, if pricey. My younger son and I were in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and noticed CraftSteak right next to Emeril's New Orleans Fishhouse. At Craftsteak, the ribeye was $56, at Emeril's $30. This price war across from a men's shop selling a sport jacket for $10,000.00. We ended up eating steak sandwiches at Emeril's bar. Sadly I don't see Emeril's listed on MGM's website any longer.
I think Jason's point was that steak is often over priced. And I agree. I can only hope for the day that I eat a steak I would be willing to pay for at $56. -

If you are looking for great steak in any restaurant, ask in advance where their beef comes from. I guarantee if you can find Nebraska beef, it will be fantastic. I've traveled the entire country with my job for many years, and have never had as good a steak as in Lincoln, NE. I believe it's the beef, not the cook, that makes a great steak.
