I'm curious what people make for christmas dinner (or other December holidays - Chanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc).
On Christmas, we usually make ham with sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, rolls, green beens. It's kind of Thanksgivingish in a way with ham instead of turkey.
I always make a run to the crowded honey baked ham store. It's a tradition.
So what do you make?

Permalink Reply by Pamela Corey on December 21, 2010 at 8:36am Usually we have ham but this year I am making prime rib, roasted baby potatoes, baked pineapple, strawberry pretzel salad and roasted carrots.
We pretty much do the Thanksgiving dinner too. Yams, mashed taters (lumpy and with skins on!), stuffing. (No green bean casserole, thanks). However, my husband is now a vegan, so this year we may buy a grain-based loaf thing instead of meat. Last year we made some kind of nut loaf, and it was good but expensive and could have fed an army.
A few years ago, however, I did start a tradition of Christmas Eve falafel! It stemmed from a potluck we were having, and for some reason I just really wanted falafel. And thus, my new tradition was born. We even leave some out for Santa!

My wife is originally from Mexico so we make tamales, usually several dozen, and give them to our friends. They can be eaten with any meal, but I especially like them for breakfast with fried eggs.
For twetny years she made me do the hard part, mixing the masa (corn flour) with water and lard by hand. It would take an hour and my forearms would be killing me. But two summers ago when I was tiling my basement and using a drill to mix the mortar, I noticed a similarity between the mortar and masa. So I know use an electric drill to mix the masa and it takes about 10 minutes.
