Every leader I've spoken to has a role model, someone they've met early on in their career that they've admired and strive to emulate.   My first role model in government was a GS-15 who taught me authenticity and not to take myself seriously.  Who was your first role model and what did they teach you?

Sounds lame but first role model was my dad - a retired fed now.  Taught me to treat people right and to be calm in face of pressure.

My Dad!  As an eight year old he took me with him to bring food boxes to the poor.  I saw something that made me ask :Dad, why are we giving them books?"  He replied "So their children have something to open for Christmas."

Apparently the modeling worked, I've been Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, Commitee Member, Prison Minister, voluntered at a Korean orphanage for the deaf (triple credit in heaven-I don't waste my time volunteering with healthy first world orphans) and last year I raised $946,000 as a Loaned Executive for the CFC.

I was selected for a new position in the mid 1990's. My new boss, Karen, told me she had a plan in one year to move on after working with the company for over 13 years. I asked someone if they thought she would really leave after having spent so many years working there. He told me that Karen always does what she says she is going to do. I thought that was a wonderful thing to say about another person and strived from that moment forward to hold myself to the same standard. If I make a commitment then I will hold to it.

Wow!  What great answers!!
My first role model in government was a GS-15 manager who decided to take me with him to another agency instead of waiting for me to leave a dying position.  He supported my professional development, was always honest with his feedback, and served as my role model when he left and I applied for his position.  He also inscribed a memorble book for me on his retirement, "The Tao of Leadership" by John Heider.  Margy? Thanks for this wonderful thread!!  Bill T.
