GovLoop - Social Network for Government

Hi folks. I work for the STate of California and specialize in telework research and application. I am aware that Calgary has a great telework program called Workshift that the city embraces (but telework won't help the Flames poor play....). What are some other positive uses of telework in other Canadian government levels? I would guess that the harsh weather necessitates telework days, and no, your boss does not need to know you play hockey at lunch. Please share your telework experiences as my state is a wee bit slow in adapting to this workplace shift. My family left Montreal in the 60's and I really miss the cultural diversity, innovations, and beauty that Canada offers. Back in the day my mom was a translator for the Crippled Children's Society and my dad an engineer for the Dominian Bridge Company, and my older brothers are still missing teeth from hockey! Stay well good people.

It is allowed but not "officially" at my department. We can have all the equipment to do it (SecureID token, borrowed laptops). It can also be used for overtime when it is allowed. Maybe the official use is for "overtime".

My employer (provicial government) has a "telecommuting" policy, which mostly gets used for "clerk" type positions. Typically, they allow a regular schedule of X days per week, and the hours, equipment (who pays for/provides what), liability and such is part of a formal agreement between the employee and supervisor, although HR does sign off as well.

I am currently on a "remote working" arrangement that has stretched the boundaries of this policy - I'm a senior manager, telecommuting full time from another city (and province), with a 75/25% remote/in office presence, for a 10 month term while my husband is on sabbatical. At this point it's hard to way whether I would recommend such an extreme arrangement for someone in my role - it's by turns hard on the team, and challenging for the manager, and communicating takes some creativity, even with technology. My department is monitoring this "pilot" (of one) from both an HR and a technology perspective (so I've been told "don't screw it up!"). But there is absolutely NO reason that someone at my level couldn't telecommute a day or two a week...

Hope that helps! (The weather in California must in SOME way make up for the things you miss from Canada!)
