GovLoop - Social Network for Government

Greetings fellow members of the HHS in the Loop group!  I think a great way for us to get started would be for each of us to introduce ourselves and share what brings us to this group.  Feel free to also share your icebreaker of choice (hobby, plans for summer vacation, favorite color, random thought, etc.)- or not. :)

I will kick off the discussion-
Hi! I work in the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs on the Web Communications Team. I am part of the HHS Center for New Media and I came to this group to help build a community of people at HHS that work, or are interested in working, on New Media/ Social Media projects. As a result of building a community, I would like to see people sharing experiences with New Media projects and collaborating on similar efforts. I would also like to know what I can do to help support and involve the HHS New Media community in the HHS Center for New Media.

Random Thought: I really like saying "HHS in the Loop Group"
Hi, I'm Eileen Brooks in the Office of Child Support Enforcement in ACF where I'm the division director over grants, training, technical assistance, our annual conference and collaborations with other programs. I'm very excited about the possibilities of new media to better connect outside the beltway. I see our customers in two groups. One is the states, tribes, counties, courts and other partners we work with in operating the child support program. The other group is the mothers and fathers the program serves. I'm looking forward to learning from and working with the HHS in the Loop group!

I'm a big fan of the University of Michigan! Go Blue!
What are you doing in Second Life?  After a Social Media conference where I heard about CDC's presence in Second Life, I thought it would be such a great idea to develop a Second Life location for the distribution of Alcohol and Substance Abuse related information.  Considering the anonymity benefits afforded to an individual by their avatar, I thought maybe it would seem like a safe place to begin to explore the possibilities of getting help or at least be able to ask some questions or obtain information.  Limited knowledge and time did not allow me to pursue this but I still like the concept.  Is Second Life still popular - you don't hear too much about it anymore and I haven't been back in since I had to put this idea on the "back, back, back burner".
Hi, I'm Myles Schlank, for now faceless. I work for Eileen Brooks and manage several grant programs including a small discretionary grant budget to encourage creative ideas that will germinate and spread.

Eileen did not have to threaten me with a low performance appraisal to join up since I'm interested in media and marketing and in HHS programs, especially as how they might connect with child support. I'm interested also in how programs work effectively.

I subscribe to FastCompany and Inc magazines looking for ideas I can apply to make our work get better results. I'm an INTJ who's on facebook. And I'm rebuilding my saxophone-playing embechure (any musicians in town?).
Howdy! I'm Kaya Walton, one of the new kids in the Web Communications Division (ASPA) block. I'm their new Web Metrics Analyst. I am currently working with Kathryn and other folks from HHS Center for New Media on social media metrics reporting and analysis. I'm excited to learn more about what other folks at HHS are doing in terms of social/new media projects. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions or ideas regarding social media metrics (or Web metrics in general).

My new year's resolution this year was to watch less sports and TV -- it has yet to be resolved.
Hi! I'm Tara and I work in the FDA for Office of Regulatory Affairs's Division of Human Resources and Development. I run a new "baby" studio that allows us to create training videos for on-demand viewing and live streaming. I am also doing R&D on how we can use social media and virtual worlds to enhance our training programs. I'm a video kid in a web world, so I'm learning a lot... FAST!

Random Icebreaker: I have an adorable and highly spoiled Boston Terrier named Arthur Peabody. And if I had a super hero power, it would be SUGAR HIGH!!! (Which is sadly always followed by my own personal Kryptonite, sugar crash.)
Hi Tara, good to "see" an FDA'er around here :-) .... I was last week taking a training in ORAU... one of my career goals in the future is to be a trainer for DHRD!  I work for ORA also, I'm in the San Juan District Office.
Howdy howdy. I'm with the HHS Center for New Media (hhsCNM). My full acronym is HHS/OS/ASPA/WCD/hhsCNM - that last one is not an official acronym but branding is everything these days... In the office I fill a niche between web content management, social media communications strategy, and video/studio productions. I'm interested in helping build the HHS family and help connect related projects to increase the efficiency and efficacy of all of already awesome things that come out of this Department.

I love learning about pretty much everything. I could watch Ted TV all day everyday.
You sound exactly like someone I could hang with! Nothing is better than TED.
TED is amazing! This is the most recent one i watched and it happens to be public health related - but then again, just about everything is 'public health related' if you're definition of 'public health' is wide enough...

Hi:
My background is in public health, and I worked at the local and state level in Indiana for 17 years. I am now working at University of Illinois at Chicago in the School of Public Health, and am pursuing a DrPH. I work full time at the school at the Center for Public Health Practice, where we focus on workforce development and leadership training. My current interests are in the area of health informatics and knowledge management. I became acquainted with GovLoop through the book, "Open Government," from O'Reilly press that was recently published. I am somewhat new to the ideas presented, but have found inspiration in the ideas and the network in GovLoop....
