GovLoop - Social Network for Government

There was a great thought piece in the May 22 WSJ called "Humans: Why They Triumphed". Historically, the societies that innovated and therefore evolved were those that reached out to other groups beyond their own. They learned from others. A quote from the article, "Innovation is a collective enterprise that relies on exchange", reminded me of social media and how it works. What societal changes might we expect from social media, a perfect example of a collective enterprise that relies on exchange?

I think one of the main societal changes will be that of the pace of change, the pace of adoption. As knowledge becomes more and more shared so the pace of change quickens. Opposition to or agreement with a range of issues happens far faster than we would have thought possible. The power moves from the center to the collective. If something does not work it will be weeded out quickly while things that do work will be adopted and championed. This is the mass focus group. Your issue or product under the microscope, disassembled, looked at from every angle. You can run but you just can't hide.
