GovLoop - Social Network for Government

GovLoop and RightNow Technologies are gearing up for an online training on June 9 titled "5 Ways Social Media Knowledge Management Can Help You Achieve Your...

In advance of that event, we're conducting a short survey in order to build the session. One of the questions is:

What are the major obstacles to using social media for knowledge management?

While the survey allows for a quick answer (cultural, funding, staffing, lack of understanding), I think it's worth having a broader conversation.

Good question Andrew. I think for people who haven't considered the role of complex systems theory, socail media needs to be considered in that context. See the rant about Blue Shirt Nation that Gary Koelling had a while back (don't have the link... g on his blog and find it).

I don't think he knew it at the time, but everything he was saying falls in line with what we know about complex systems and how to worok within them... failure is necessary, experiment, iterate, listen to users (give them a voice), forget your ego, only build what users use, etc....

Social media obviously has a lot of possibilities in KM. Depends what you think KM is of course.
