Any suggestion for wedding soundtrack? Must play or Must NOT play

I'm putting together a list for my wedding DJ of what songs to play and what to NOT play.

Any suggestions?

80 person wedding - mix of ages.  I'm looking for mix of classic pop/rock/dance with current pop stuff.

Not a fan of country or too many line dances.

Jenyfer - Love the photos!

Seems like 60s/70s r&b is a winner...thanks for specific songs.  Plus some classic CCR, Seger.

Danielle - love it.  My favorite wedding was a Jewish wedding where I got to help hoist the bride on the chair.  Fun.

Mary - I debate about Electric Slide....I may allow 1 group dance but don't want a ton

Simmons - love this list....

Gwynne - Let me clear my throat..dunna na na na....dunna na na na...jamming.

Must not play "Gold Digger" by Kanye West. That could get awkward...

Play a mix of things but keep the volume down!!!!! There are so many folks who want to visit or even make new friends with the "other" family- but when you have to scream at them that you couldn't hear what they said it's not a good party. I have left about 4 weddings in the past 2 years with a pounding headache way earlier than I would have. The pain of walking past a speaker that has shot my eardrum out is not a nice thing while trying to be celebrating and having fun. Pain is not fun, permanent hearing loss is not good.

And I really love it when they DON'T play "YMCA", "The Chicken Dance", and "Celebrate" at a wedding.

II wasn’t too crazy about playing songs at my wedding simply because they were standard wedding songs! We excluded the Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey, Celebrate, We Are Family, etc., and received no complaints. If Uncle Ed really needs to hear some Motown or Neil Diamond he can break out his 45s when he gets home, lol!

I leaned more toward contemporary, and overall didn’t want to play a ton of songs that were 30+ years old. We played a lot of songs from the 90s (which I consider our era) by Oasis, the Cranberries, Train, Dave Matthews Band, etc.

I would just sit with your wife and compile a list of songs that “move you”, as this is ultimately about you two! It takes more work than just saying to the DJ, “Give us your standard wedding mix”, but it will mean more to you in the end. And you can let the DJ cut loose with new music for the last few hours to let the teens and 20-somethings have some fun too!

I'm a R&B person, so I love

Etta James At Last or Sunday Kind of Love

Some of the Glee Soundtrack. Their version of Bruno Mars Marry You, and Queen's Somebody to Love is awesome.

Hey Soul Sister by Train

Lady Antebellum Just a Kiss (they are country but not too country and kind of crossover pop)

You need some dance stuff like Black Eyed Peas - Just Can't Get Enough, Beyonce - All of the Single Ladies, Chris Brown - Yeah x3, Maroon 5 -  Moves Like Jagger, Pitbull and NeYo - Give Me Everything, and so on.

I hate going to weddings where they're playing songs that are not even current unless there's a theme of course.

I think with all of the feedback here, you will do fine. :-) Good luck!

Please, NO "Chicken Dance"!

My son and his bride used the NCIS THEME as a march for all the wedding party to be introduced.

Their "first dance" was to the Jack Rabbit Slim's Twist Contest track from the Pulp Fiction film soundtrack.

Otherwise they used songs from several decades so all guests could recognize something.  They gave each guest a CD of all the music as a favor.  I loved their wedding cake ornament.

Best wishes, Steve!

For romance, anything by Jim Brickman. He rocks a wedding. ;-)  Here are a few to choose from:

The Gift: (with Anne Cochran and Tracy Silverman)  (their concert makes for a romantic evening, too.)

Congratulations, Steve! Happy Romantic Wedding Day!

Of course, you want to play "your songs." And also the tunes that were popular when you both were coming of age and really starting to enjoy music. In addition, I think you can't go wrong with Motown and Stax selections. Stax is the Memphis soul genre that includes Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, the Box Tops, and Booker T and the MGs. With Motown and Stax, and some classic '50s Roots Rock, you will have tons of folks dancing. Throw in some hits from the '60s, '70s and '80s, and you've got quite a cool reception.
