GovLoop - Social Network for Government

This is a place for the selected Members of the "Online Team" to share and discuss information during (and probably after) the OGD Workshop on Feb. 17th.

I'm Stephen Buckley and I'm the Online Team Leader.  As of today, there are ten members of that Team.  And even though each Member knows that he/she is on the Team, they don't know who the other Team Members are. (Note: The Team might "live" past the Workshop, and expand its membership. We'll see how things go.)

So this is a good place to introduce ourselves, and share those "cool ideas" that we already have for making government more "open", i.e., more transparent, participatory, and collaborative.  Along the way, we'll probably come up with new ideas, too.

Since the Online Team will not be attending the Feb. 17th Workshop "in-person", we will be using a moderated phone-conference at the same time that we are looking at the information and links that the Team Members have provided here.  In other words, we are all going to be clicking and reading the same webpages at the same time, as we talk on the phone (one person speaking at a time).

Some of the Most/Frequent Important Links that we will use:

1.  Open Government Memorandum (1/21/09)

2.  Open Government Directive (12/8/09)

3.  Open Government Dialogue - Phase 1 - Brainstorming (Spring 2009)

4.  NAPA's Summary Analysis of the Open Government Brainstorm (6/1/09)

5.  White House Blog: An Open Door to Open Government (2/8/10)

6.  OpenGovTracker (including links to Agencies' "Citizen Ideas" sites)

7.  OpenGovPlaybook (wiki of OpenGov resources)

Send me a message if you have any questions.  I will send you the phone-conference number by separately by email.  We will be on the phone 9-11 am and 1-2 pm on Wednesday, February 17th.

Adding to Matt Zuby's idea: In the spirit open government directive, let us have a true open forum on persistent cookies. Perhaps there is a true lack of knowledge about cookies in the public sector, versus what efficient private sector organizations are doing.

Specifically, these private sector entities actual leverage persistent cookies to lead to a better, more relevant content to develop world class websites that are reduce costs.
"You cannot manage, what you cannot measure". An agency that just "complies" with a directive, may earn "checks" for compliance, but they do not have any additional data to help them become more transparent, participatory and collaborative. The hope is that there is a standard consistent way to do this. I am admittedly biased, but I do feel that we have done this at @foreseeresults.
I wonder if we are listening to the voice of visitor or just the visit of the squeaky wheel. It is important to have a random intercept v. self select way to prevent this. A rigorous methodology should be implemented that is truly measuring agency audiences.

No, Stephen, it is the technology that limits discussion.
What about RSS feeds for every gov't web page?

It could be useful for some business or person who wants to know when a page (ANY page) is updated w/ important information to them.

Hi,
I know I missed most of the day. I am offering this link to my idea on Social Networking and Grant Management which I posted on the GSA site.

I will continue to add ideas that make sense and will improve government capacity in response to OGD. I am sensitive to the use of buzzwords which can create barriers to participation. I do think it's going to take many big and small ideas to actually see results. For me this means flexibility and staying open.

I'll see if I can get another one up before the end of the day. I always love feedback.

I like Barry's idea of an ever evolving GovBook. I would also like to have lists of who is doing what with whom.

If we can standardize some "tip sheets" for people, based on research and experience we would get further by saving people a lot of time and duplication of effort. Also, there are private sector, not government related businesses and individuals who are doing some extraordinary things. They too need to be connected somehow and vice versa.

Thanks Stephen for moderating our group and Lucas for making it happen again.
