Comment by John Cardillo on August 6, 2012 at 1:49pm I totally agree; I feel the same way. In this case, though, there are compelling reasons to create an account such as information specific to you and your retirement benefit available 24/7; access to calculators and other tools not available on our public website; the ability to sign up for and receive newsletters and annual profiles electronically; etc. About 25% of our membership have created accounts in the past 2-3 years, but at this stage we expected to have many more "customers" We market this secure area heavily and tout the many benefits of membership, but signups are steady but slow.
Comment by Lisa Jahn on August 6, 2012 at 1:36pm John, I'm not a techie either, so I can't give you the tech answers you're looking for. But as a web user, I can tell you that I've grown wicked weary of setting up "accounts" and keeping track of passwords. These days if a website asks me to set up a new account, I won't do it unless there's a REALLY compelling reason, truly must-have information behind that wall.
Comment by John Cardillo on August 6, 2012 at 1:22pm I'm a newbie to this group, so hello all. Your should also know I am not a techie, so if you throw jargon at me I likely will not know what it means.
I am looking to increase the number of members who create accounts and access the secure, members-only area of our website. I am told overlays are a good wayt to accomplish this, but I need more information about them.
How, for example, do they differ from pop-up ads, which generally are considered an annoyance? Are they ADA compliant? Are there security or other issues with overlays that I need to be aware of? If anyone out there already uses overlays, can you share with me any data showing how they have positively impacted your efforts?
Thanks in advance for the feedback and assistance.

Comment by Andrew Krzmarzick on May 23, 2012 at 9:18am I'm wondering if you do anything special to optimize content for Chrome vs. Internet Explorer as a browser...seems to be increasingly important based on this blog post:
