How to Hire Our Returning Vets?

I am curious if anyone on govloop would be able to provide a well-known and somewhat vetted resource for sharing new job opportunities with veterans. I believe that the leadership skills and unique experiences should be tapped by our economy, not to mention the moral obligation we have to take care of those who served their country. Please note, I am not asking for myself or my agency and I am very aware of the authorities that exist in the Federal hiring process. I am asking because there is a…See More

Regulating Risk

As some may have already read elsewhere, Tim Samaras, along with his son Paul Samaras and colleague Carl Young, were among the at least 13 confirmed fatalities of an EF-3 Tornado that struck El Reno, OK on Friday, May 31st. Tim was a well-respected member of the storm chasing community lauded for his outreach efforts and emphasis on safety in chasing. He was also a record-breaking researcher and true innovator in the field of tornado and severe weather data collection and…

Leading a Life of Public Service

Posted on May 2, 2013 at 1:45pm 0 Comments

Yesterday I came across a talk recently given by President Clinton at Georgetown University. It is part of a series he will be doing on advice for a life in public service. I listened to this talk mainly because I am starting to re-imagine my public service career and I am unsure whether or not government is the right fit for me. I think President Clinton offered many great pieces of advice, and I encourage others to…

What Now?

I'm pretty sure my situation is not unique, so I thought I would reach out to this amazing community to ask, "What now?"

When I first came to DC to pursue my MPP I knew it was going to be a challenge. I had zero experience in government or politics and the closest I had ever been to the Hill was watching C-SPAN. Nevertheless, I worked hard in class, networked with professionals (insert shameless plug for AABPA here) and…

Hi Amanda!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have definitely been there - I recently relocated from Florida after two years of looking for a job in DC and landed a great opportunity at USDA. I also connected with AABPA members while looking for a job in Florida. I have been very fortunate to get where I am.

I love your depiction of the road to success!

If you enjoy working at GAO, I would encourage you to explore all your options in remaining with the agency. I'm sure knowing what avenue to go down will set you on the right path. You're bright and optimistic - any agency would be lucky to have you. Continue to network with professional oraganizations and people, and look out job opportunities related to your portfolio at GAO.

Hopefully, we meet at the symposium and can talk more then.
