Starting a company?Selling a company?Trying to resolve a thorny problem?Trying to UNDERSTAND a complex problem?Make a list.Seriously, start writing a list. In the last two days I’ve been amazed how half a dozen impasse situations were improved by somebody writing a list. Now because I’m a hotshot consultant, let me improve on perfection. For two of the lists, I was in meetings when someone asked for my thoughts. I was hungry, or had a tee time, so I said I would send it to them.Right there in…See More

Glogster

The Paint Branch High School is special. Years ago they decided that their annual science fair shouldn't just be a checkoff on a list and started redesigning their event. They looked at why no one came and decided to move it from the middle of the day to the evening to make it easier for parents, friends, and the community to join their celebration. If you're going to have an audience, how about entertaining them? So they began offering their Science Expo.So they started designing projects that…See More

Models and Actuals

Last week I read 2nd Machine Age, which pointed out thatMoore’s Law, that computing power per cost doubles approximately every 18 months and has been chugging along for 60 years, is not a law, but the sum of thousands of heroic breakthroughs, a lot of people doing good work. Every time some theoretically imposed boundary…See More

The Second Half Of The Chessboard

The story goes that the inventor of chess showed it to the emperor, who was mightily impressed, and asked the inventor to name a suitable reward. The seemingly modest response was one grain of rice on the first square, then doubling the rice on each subsequent square. When it turned out that many grains of rice had never been grown, the emperor had the inventor killed. Old story. Ray Kurzweil (p. 46) observes that while numbers do get large on the first half of the chessboard, we come across…See More

Want A Result, Offered A Process

I try to deal in real, tactical issues. Strategy becomes an explanation of what happened the last time. However, I have been working with a client who made a make or buy decision to purchase some business services. Maybe we were asking the wrong people, but what came back were all these offers to run a process, as if the result was incidental.Maybe it’s our litigious environment, or changing economy, but…See More

Zeitgeist

Zeitgeist or The Spirit Of The Times, or temporary craziness, occurs in business, too. Over the past few years watching disintermediation of industry after industry has not only terminated scores of businesses, but also dramatically changed the business processes of the survivors. There are still top down organizations trying to hold off new customer-driven markets, while increasing pressure strains remaining resources. But fewer of…See More

Wall of Shame

A site owner told me he was taking down his “Wall of Shame” or leaderboard, showing the top contributors to his site. It was an administrative headache as users changed their posting patterns. He was most upset about power users who had been thrown off the site, but their cumulative contribution continued to show.Dave Eggers’ unsettling book, The Circle, recommended by …See More

Reagan Leadership

Not Ron, but Henry/Frank/Danny/Jamie Reagan  of Blue Bloods, a four-year series on CBS.How many people follow Blue Bloods? In a time of changing mores, Blue Bloods is an examination of how to live, how to act, where to focus. There are four male protagonists. They are all at different levels in the family business, NYC police. , Henry, the grandfather is the retired police commissioner, Frank, his son is the current police commissioner, and Frank’s two sons, Danny (elder), a hotshot detective,…See More

Indirect Economy, Direct Benefit

I was sitting in a board meeting when the subject of sponsors came up. It has come up in several organizations, actually. Usually goes around the table and then doesn’t go anywhere. When all is said and done a lot more is said than done. The refrain is we’re outa money, they’ve got money. Let’s get us some of that money.I’ve sold sponsorships, some inadvertently, and the key is knowing what you are providing and how someone else can use it. Those inadvertent sponsorships occurred when I didn’t…See More

Wrong Perspective

In the last 90 days I’ve seen more than ten promising organizations shut their doors. They just didn’t see a way to continue.A couple blamed a lack of monetization strategy. They couldn’t find a get rich quick scheme.Several others said they had key contracts winding down.I suspect the other two bored themselves to death. What I noticed was that they all made a change to increase efficiency, curtail constructive time wasting. Each had found a promising new service to deliver, then turned it over…See More

Square, Triangle, Circle

I admire artists and always wanted to draw. I’ve bought books about different sides of the brain, kits for drawing, cartooning, sketching, and a continuing stream of implements.Yesterday we went to Ed’s 2 hour class So You Think You Can’t Draw at Plaza Art and got slung into the mainstream.I’ve gone to many free seminars for technology, financial products, services, philanthropies, and government. I’ve even…See More
