The Washington Post reports that in September the Postal Service waived the requirement that stamp honorees must be deceased for 5 years. The Post Office then asked citizens to nominate who they would like to see on stamps. Since the announcement, the Post Office has received over 1,500 submissions by mail and 1,000 through social media channels. The Washington Post reports:
Former Apple chief Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, evangelist Billy Graham, President Obama, former president Bill Clinton, comedian Jerry Lewis and Baltimore Orioles great Cal Ripken have received the most nominations from customers who submitted ideas by mail. Among customers who submitted ideas through Twitter and Facebook, Lady Gaga is tops.
Other entries included recipients of the Military's Medal of Honor. Postmaster General Patrick Donahue, along with a panel of former post office employees, designers, artists and congressional staffers will make a decision next year on who will be honored on the stamp. The panel typically reviews over 40,000 stamps for approval each year.
