New Sensation with Caleb Howe, City of Independence

Since ELGL is not a big fan of icebreakers and since we would rather not know what animal you want to be, this blog feature will serve as a means of introducing new members. While you won’t learn about their favorite animal, you will learn about their ideal Sunday morning, which dead people would they FaceTime with, and which song best describes their life.

Q&A

Tell us about three projects that you are working on.

As a current intern at the City of Independence I have been part of several projects from different departments. The biggest project I was part of was a historic research project for the city. Independence got a grant from the state of Oregon to research and put together a panel of the role of hops from 1900-1940. I worked closely with Rogue Chatoe and the Museum Director. I research the panel topics and put them together. They are now currently in the process of being finalized.

Right now I am working on the city’s historic webpage editing misplaced locations, and earlier this term I worked with economic director by doing research about local industries.

(Complete the sentence) Before I die I want to

to help those in need and travel.

Describe the inside of your car:

Right now my car has quite a bit of dog hair on the seats because I was taking my black lab to a park. Besides the dog hair there are a few books and coffee cups.

Your mentors:

Western Oregon University political science professor Mark Henkels questions whether the university's administration has done its best in negotiations for faculty wages.

I have several mentors that I can think of. I would say that my academic advisor and professor Mark Henkels has been a mentor. His state and local government class is what got me interested in public policy and administration. As an advisor he pushed me to do my best work and open up to new ideas.

My other mentor is an old childhood neighbor, Dain Eichel. Dain and his wife have three daughters that I grew up with. I was like an honorary son into the family. He taught me how to fix things around the house, how to treat people, and took me dirt bike riding every chance he had. It is a relationship that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Most recent concert:

I was able to attend the Macklemore concert for free when he came to Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene a couple of weeks ago.

Since I am in my last term of college. I would have to say that my proudest career accomplishment right now is graduating in 3 weeks.

What song best describes your life?

Favorite thing to do on a Sunday morning:

If the weather is nice I like to ride my dirt bike at a track or trails. When the weather is bad I like to read the paper and drink coffee and relax.
