And the NextGen Public Service Winners Are…

Young Government Leaders (YGL) and GovLoop present the NextGen Public Service Awards for superior public service and achievement. The 4th Annual NextGen Public Service Awards were given at the 2014 NextGen Awards Ceremony, which will kicked off the NextGen Training Summit on July 23rd in Washington, DC.


For the past two months, I have been honored to introduce you to the finalists for the NextGen Public Service Awards. If you missed any of the interviews with our 15 finalists and three groups, don’t worry you can check them out here.

These finalists are government employees who go above the beyond the call of duty. They have dedicated their intelligence, exuberance and professional lives to improving and invigorating the public service field.


Young Government Leaders and Govloop brought all the finalists together for an Awards Ceremony on Wednesday July 23rd. In an evening of celebration we highlighted the talented cohort who are seeing to cut through the red tape holding back efficient and effective governance and public service.

The 2014 NextGen Public Service Award Winners are:

NextGen Exemplary Leadership Award recognizing a public service leader under 40 who has demonstrated benevolence, competence, integrity, dedication, and commitment to improve and inspire our communities at the local, national, or international level. This individual embodies what the Next Generation can do in public service.

  • Desmond Proctor, Deputy United States Marshal, United States Marshals Service

NextGen Exemplary Group Award – recognizing a group inside government with an average age under 40 who have demonstrated benevolence, competence, integrity, dedication, and commitment to improve and inspire our communities at the local, national, or international level. This group embodies what the Next Generation can do in public service.

  • Whistleblower Protection Program of Region 7, OSHA

NextGen Innovator of the Year Award – recognizing a public service leader under 40 who has identified new opportunities and built up the organization with consistent improvement and development of technology in an innovative way at the local, national, or international level.

NextGen Courage Award – recognizing an individual with less than 3 years of public service experience that is blazing the path for their generation in government with courage and determination at the local, national, or international level.

  • Allison Gillus, Briefing Books & White House Interagency Support, Department of Homeland Security

NextGen Silent Hero Award – recognizing a public service leader of any age who has operated behind the scenes, silently working in a dedicated and committed fashion, without the limelight, who has laid the foundation for stellar public service results and community change at the local, national, or international level.

  • Mika J. Cross, Work/Life and Wellness Program Manager, US Department of Agriculture

NextGen Advocate Award – recognizing an individual of any age dedicated to cultivating talent, mentoring, and helping to guide NextGen public service leaders to become our future community leaders at the local, national, or international level.

  • Karen Robinson, Executive Director, Texas Department of Information Resources (Texas CIO)

It wasn’t just the audience in attendance thanking the attendees. We also complied a list of celebs and politicians who wanted to extend their thanks to the finalists and winners.
