I think that IT does get quite often get relegated to the backroom, but from my experience, this is often b/c they don’t truly want to engage with the business units. In my role I see it over and over again, a business need or opportunity is diminished or dismissed by IT as unimportant b/c it doesn’t fit within their understanding of business requirements and it typically pushes their boundaries. With SaaS options and the dramatic growth of Web 2.0, IT has an opportunity to be a key support and guiding partner, but if they decide to not take it, they will be pushed aside, and will assume a secondary position.
