An Austin seventh-grader’s device to protect ATM users from identity theft won second place in a national contest for young scientists.

Sydney Clark, 12, was invited to participate in the 12th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge finals Oct. 5 after qualifying as one of 10 finalists from across the nation.

Sydney, who is home-schooled, spent about 200 hours on a two-minute video on her invention of a box that sits over an automated teller machine’s PIN pad. The box includes louvers that restrict the view of the screen to anyone who isn’t directly in front of the pad. Mirror film, manufactured by 3M, is placed over the louvers to allow customers to see through to the pad while also being aware of their surroundings.
