There is a free application for the iPad called OverDrive. You register your local library with the application (not all library systems are set up for this yet) and then you check out books that download to the iPad for the prescribed length of time. I had to sign up for a library card with the next county over from me since my county library system is not that sophisticated. Once I got my new library card I have been downloading library books or putting in requests for them. Not everything is available yet and there is still some delay with popular new books like there is with hard copy library books, but the process is working like I had hoped it would. I am torn as I wonder if this will alter book stores and libraries and eliminate them but I definately love the ability to finish a book in the middle of the night and go check out another one while lying in bed.
