While Facebook has brought us closer together, I feel like it has also weakened the action of "catching up". If I want to know what's going on in the life of a friend or family member, I used to give them a call to find out what's new. Now, my first instinct is to check their Facebook page and I'm immediately provided with everything I need to know.
It's also a little jarring to run into an old acquaintance I haven’t seen in years, only to have them already know what’s going on in my life because of Facebook (including what I ate for lunch yesterday, because let’s face it, my status updates typically revolve around sandwiches). It will be interesting to see how Facebook affects personal social interaction in the long run. For now, I agree with Jennifer’s friends, we still need to make the effort to go the extra mile to touch base with friends and relatives!
