We need all the help we can get in repairing the tarnished image of Federal employees, from any segment of our society. Part of the government – our military – figured out how to maintain their image. When we had the draft, that wasn’t the case. We all have opportunities to impress the public, but a few heroes (such as the Park Ranger who gave made the ultimate sacrifice) can’t overcome the malaise that citizens experience when they go to a Social Security office, or the disgruntled TSO at the airport. We need our public affairs folks engaged in telling the story of our everyday successes. We need embedded media to show the public the good things that we do every day. We need to instill a sense of service in our employees and stop tolerating those who tarnish our image.
