I’m not sure if I’m on point, but my most challenging personal employment issue was my decision whether to make the military a career or to go back to being a civilian. I had to weight the advantages like job security, 20-year retirement, and adventure inherent in a military career (USMC) with the advantages of being a civilian – getting my degree (GI Bill), having a healthy family relationship, freedom, etc. I could have retired in 1995 and have a new career. Instead, I chose to take the road less traveled and jump back into civilian clothes. I have never regretted this decision and I just hope that our returning soldiers and sailors are as successful as I was in transitioning back to civilian life.
