ICYMI – President Obama issued a memorandum to agency heads on July 15th about “Expanding National Service Through Partnerships to Advance Government Priorities.”

The President wants to expand opportunities for Americans to volunteer to help the Government accomplish its mission. This will “expand economic and educational opportunities, enhance agencies’ abilities to accompish their missions, efficiently use tax dollars, help individuals develop skills that will enable them to prepare for long-term careers, and build a pipeline to employment both inside and outside the Federal Government.”

This sounds like a good idea, based on a rich history of government-sponsored volunteer programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Americorps, Park Service, USCG Auxiliary, FEMA Disaster Corps, etc.).

How is your agency using volunteers? How can they expand on these programs?
