GovLoop has a group of volunteers that select and prepare a “Project of the Week” to highlight and honor great work being done in and around government. Do you know of a project that should be featured? Please share it below and we will take it into consideration for the future!

Just a couple that I think are great:
-The new civilian Acquisition Institute (DAU for civilians) ran out of VA
    -Better Buy Project
-Would love to see more state and local examples
-Highlight the Australia Gov 2.0 Task force
    -VA Idea Factory
    -Green Gov Project from WhiteHouse
-Making Gov Cool Again project from OPM

Here’s one I just heard – the State of Washington’s Government Management Accountability and Performance program. As we talk more and more about instituting a performance-based environment in government, it seems that Washington has instituted a model culture.

It’s an effort to get people receiving benefit payments from SSA/SSI/VA/Pensions to switch from checks to direct deposit.

“Chirp” is the name of the Intelligence Community (IC) Microblogging pilot sponsored by the National Intelligence Coordination Center (NIC-C) for Intelink U, S, and TS. Chirp was developed by IC Enterprise Solutions (ICES) and is based on StatusNet, an Open Source microblogging platform that provides much of the same functionality as the commercial product Twitter.

Chirp is an excellent example of using Open Source Software to provide a secure, cost effective microblogging capability for the DoD/IC

Many recent events such as the Mumbai hotel terrorist attack, earthquakes in Italy and China, Iranian elections, and the initial reporting of H1N1 have demonstrated the power of microblogging tools to both inform and rapidly distribute information. The brief status messages lowers users’ requirement of time and thought investment for content generation and allows more frequent updates. Because of these efficiencies, microblogging is quickly becoming an invaluable resource to tap into the expertise of a large community to make connections, coordinate action, and solve problems.

The Department of Labor is celebrating the National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. In honor of this, DOL has designed, with it’s internal Office of Public Affairs (OPA) designers, a wonderful commemorative poster.

I think this is inspiring, beautiful, and should be shared a a “Project of the Week”.
