It’s not a pie-in-the-sky dream. The Air Mobility Command plans to go paperless by December and will use tablets to display digital flight charts.
NextGov recently reported that the organization has procured about 18,000 tablets that will house navigation charts and technical manuals for crews.
The publication continues:
“The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s Office of Aeronautical Navigation started developing digital flight charts in the summer of 2011, and a beta version of the Apple iOS has been available since January, according to NGA spokesman Kenneth White. He said the Apple version of NGA’s digital flight charts is available on DVD and is downloadable to selected users over the Defense Department’s unclassified network.”
Concerns have been raised about the use of the iPad, which is made in China. DISA has said that it will issue security guidelines regarding smartphones and tablets this August.
