Veteran Affairs has made a request to companies in the tech industry to field about 100,000 tablet computers, and incorporate them into the department’s work flow.

The department has developed a work around for federal wireless security standards that supports the devices’ management in a vendor-operated cloud computing environment, according to the request.

The VA plans to deploy Apple iPads, as well as other tablets that run the Windows or Android operating system. The Apple and Android operating systems are not currently compliant with the Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2.

The tablet deployment will thus far be the government’s largest and most ambitious.

Do you think tablet computers should be implemented in other agencies? What will be the measure of success for the VA in this initiative? Could you see your department doing more with tablet computers?

What in the world does the VA need with 100,000 tablets all at once? Especially if they’re not compliant with government standards? Seems unusual, to me.
