Last week, the White House released proposed cybersecurity legislation to better secure Federal computer networks and protect national infrastructure. The legislation focuses on four key areas:

    • Improved consumer protection in the event of data breaches and increased penalties for cyber criminals
    • Voluntary information sharing across all levels of government and with private industry to identify emerging threats and bolster security infrastructure
    • Strengthening Federal computing networks through FISMA reform, new personnel, and Intrusion Prevention Systems
    • Creating a new framework to protect individuals’ privacy and civil liberties through layered oversight and Congressional reporting
