    Position Summary
    The Education Associate is a temporary, 4-month position (June-September 2009) with the potential for extended employment in the future. In collaboration with Hope Street Group Staff and Board, the Education Associate will support the development and implementation of our P-12 education reform platform, with a focus on teacher effectiveness. This will include research, networking (including online social networking), volunteer outreach, and communications support. The Associate will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of outside experts and researchers and will help recruit volunteers—with a focus on reform-minded teachers—to effectively mobilize coalitions and communicate ideas to policymakers, educators, the media, and other key audiences. This position requires an innovative thinker with a demonstrated ability to research, analyze, synthesize, and communicate around public policy issues. The successful candidate will possess exemplary writing, research, analytical, and communications skills. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline oriented, dynamic environment with multiple ongoing responsibilities and high expectations for quality of work. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively on projects and tasks is essential.


    * Conduct independent research and analysis on assigned education reform policy areas (with an emphasis on teacher effectiveness) for diverse audiences through innovative and traditional means;
    * Work with the technology director to develop related content and strategy for Policy2.Org, our online platform for policy development;
    * Assist with development of Hope Street Group’s education reform mobilization drive and support the development of the campaign’s virtual community;
    * Maintain relationships with policymakers and education experts to build the organization’s policy content and network;
    * Work with Hope Street Group’s development staff to support education-related content for funding opportunities;
    * Be an intelligent representative of Hope Street Group to the public, able to articulate our mission, explain our policy solutions and ideas, and discuss our products and initiatives;
    * Contribute to Hope Street Group’s overall goals and objectives as needed.

    The ideal candidate will have:

    * A commitment to improving economic opportunity in the United States.
    * At least a Master’s degree in public policy, education, or a related field;
    * At least 3 years’ experience in conducting education policy analysis, research, or other equivalent experience in a similar field or educational organization;
    * Experience in volunteer outreach and/or advocacy work;
    * Classroom teaching or public school-based work experience (preferred but not required);
    * Knowledge and proficiency in Internet communications technologies (e-mail, Web, blogs, social networking, etc.) and MS Office applications;
    * Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and virtual environment;
    * Ability to take initiative, independently manage multiple tasks, and prioritize competing demands;
    * Excellent interpersonal, writing, editing, and verbal communications skills;
    * Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

    Work Environment
    Hope Street Group is a virtual organization. We conduct staff and volunteer business from locations across the United States and expect applicants to maintain their own workspaces and report to regular staff conference calls (reimbursement offered for communications). The strongly preferred location for this position is in the D.C. metro area. Hope Street Group is an equal opportunity employer.
