    Job Description
    The City of San Antonio is in search of an exceptional public health professional with a proven track record of success for a position as Assistant Metropolitan Health District Director.

    THE OPPORTUNITY: The Assistant Metropolitan Health District Director position is an outstanding opportunity for a dynamic and innovative seasoned professional to lead, guide, and direct public health programs for one of the country’s largest municipalities and associated unincorporated areas of Bexar County. Strategic in its purpose and collegial in its design, this position provides the “right” Candidate an opportunity to make a real difference.

    In concert with an exceptional and dynamic executive leadership team, this Assistant Director will be instrumental in building city and county-wide partnerships and oversee the Metropolitan Health District’s Community Health Division, focusing on the City’s Population-based Services.

    THE POSITION: The Assistant Director will oversee the City’s Community Health Division with the Metropolitan Health District and will understand the value and benefit of population-based, preventative and educational approaches to the Department’s wide-ranging services and programs. The successful candidate will be expected to play a significant role in assisting the Director to proactively advocate the movement of priorities and policies to promote community health and wellness.

    Additionally the Assistant Director is responsible for the following:
    – Directing and advising on high-level projects and programs that have city and county-wide impact
    – Coordinating departmental activities with those of other departments and outside agencies
    – Developing best practices and innovative solutions in the areas of population-based, preventative and educational public health programs
    – Responding to and resolving sensitive inquiries and complaints from internal and external sources

    Appointed by the City Manager, The Assistant Director reports to the Metropolitan Health District Director.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: Will have a demonstrated passion for public health, with a high level of personal ownership in creating a clear vision for the future of public health. Additionally, the candidate must have extensive managerial experience in a complex setting that offers a wide diversity of cultural, political, and public health issues; outstanding communication skills with the ability to articulate both the objectives, and strategic vision of the Metropolitan Health District to its constituents; a proven track record of motivating and developing staff through the use of innovative and creative measures; and demonstrated measurable success in the areas of public health program processes, policies, and procedures. The selected candidate will have advanced knowledge of community health programs, initiatives, and issue; and knowledge of epidemiology and disease control.

    THE QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires the successful candidate have a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Public Health, Public Health Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration or similar field, with emphasis in health care systems. The selected candidate will have over five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in public health administration, including at least three (3) years of administrative or supervisory responsibility at the senior managerial or executive leadership level.
