    Job Description
    “Weed like to welcome you” to apply to be the City of Weed’s next City Administrator as the City enters its second 50 years following its January 25, 1961 incorporation. Named after its founder Abner Weed, this full service City (population 3,000, 29 FT employees + over 40 PT employees and volunteers) is located in beautiful Siskiyou County on the northwest slope of Mount Shasta in the Shasta Trinity National Forest, yet right on Interstate 5 at its critical junction with Highway 97. One of the most ethnically and culturally diverse small towns in the U.S., Weed and its environs offer unique, unparalleled small town living, including the active involvement and creativity of its residents, and the dynamic presence of College of the Siskiyous. Additional higher education, outstanding medical facilities, exceptional entertainment, and seasonal outdoor recreational opportunities are readily available locally, or within easy reach in both Northern California and Southern Oregon (including abundant skiing, hunting, fishing, golf, kayaking, cycling, running and other outdoor activities).

    Weed’s current City Administrator is retiring after over 12 years of service to the City. The 5-member Weed City Council is both offering and seeking a long-term mutual commitment with its next City Administrator, and looking forward to continuing on the City’s present track of organizational improvement and community progress.

    This time of transition from the decline of Weed’s historical lumber industry roots to greater post-recession economic vibrancy is an exceptional professional opportunity, for the chance to provide organizational and community leadership in helping the City realize its future prospects and potential lies ahead for the successful candidate. This will include further streamlining and strengthening the City organization itself, while guiding and mentoring City Council in the development of a new City vision for its next 50 years and new strategic plan for the next decade that give rise to greater community cohesion and commitment. A dynamic “role your sleeves up and get on with it” leadership style that encourages and inspires others to do the same is what is most needed right now, as are sharing options, facilitating decision making, and holding accountable those on whom Weed’s success most depends.

    In addition to a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration or a related field (MPA a plus), and at least 5 years of progressively responsible local government experience, highly desirable attributes include a collaborative teambuilding management style, stellar social and public relations, excellent computer and oral and written communication skills, the ability to thrive in a hands-on multi-task environment, and a high level of ethical integrity.
