The Department of Transportation Services, University of Maryland is seeking exceptional individuals to serve as Coordinators (Transit Operations Supervisors).This position oversees the day-to-day operations of the transit services of the Shuttle-UM Transit System, Department of Transportation Services and ensures that safe, dependable, and reliable transit service is provided to transit passengers. The Shuttle-UM Transit System is University operated and transports 2.5 million passengers per year. The department is a richly diverse organization comprised of over 300 student and full-time staff working throughout all levels. With a fleet of 54 transit vehicles, including cutaway vans, 30-, 35-, and 40-foot transit buses, as well as 5 luxury motor coaches, the system provides commuter, evening, paratransit, and charter services on a 24/7 basis.
The Transit Operations Supervisor is responsible for staffing all service shifts during his/her on-duty shift, as well as responding to system emergencies and crises, including accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and staffing shortages. Great latitude in decision making is afforded this position, and the incumbent must be capable of working independently and without constant supervision in a very fast-paced work environment. He/she is responsible for driving shifts that are not staffed, conducting dispatch and training operations when necessary, facilitating random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing, and conducting ridership tallies and stop studies. Additionally, he/she directly supervises a staff of 10-15 fulltime drivers. This position also ensures compliance with University Sexual Harassment Prevention Program policies, Injured Workers Insurance Fund procedures, and facilitates the Performance Review and Development process for subordinates. Evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required. The Transit Operations Supervisor works closely with the management staff to review and provide route data, acts as a liaison to the maintenance, dispatch, and operations staff to orchestrate the daily transit functions, and conducts interviews, hiring, and training for new driving staff. This position will also work a great deal with the public by responding to passenger inquiries and resolving passenger complaints. NOTE: This position is considered ESSENTIAL and is also SAFETY-SENSITIVE.
High School Degree is Required, Bachelor’s Degree is Preferred. Transit/transportation industry experience required. At least 1 year of supervisory/managerial experience is strongly preferred. Must possess a class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Airbrakes endorsements, and DOT medical card; or be able to obtain one through the department training program. Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), Commercial Driver’s License regulations, and drug and alcohol testing and education regulations preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must. Excellent customer service and conflict management skills are preferred. Good computer and data management skills are necessary, specifically well versed in Microsoft Office and Internet programs. Position requires someone who possesses excellent supervisory, administrative, organizational, and multi-tasking skills and is also a self starter, flexible, and has a positive attitude. The Transit Operations Supervisor will need to be able to communicate and connect well with all levels and types of staff and be committed to the success and satisfaction of both the department’s employees as well as the department’s customers. In summary, the incumbent must be able to supervise and manage multiple services and personnel in a fast-paced and diverse work environment.
