    The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a social media specialist and to support the Department of Homeland Security in accomplishing its mission through social media platforms. This task will be accomplished by ensuring social media content remains consistent, timely, of high quality, appropriate for intended audiences and accurately reflects DHS goals and priorities.

    This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of Public Affairs (OPA), Office of the Secretary and Executive Management.

    Duties of a Public Affairs Specialist (New Media Specialist) include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Work to increase activity and readership of the DHS Blog as primary editor: schedule, write and post entries, coordinate editorial review, review and approve or disapprove comments
    • Manage and run DHS social media third party tools, including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts along with open government platforms.
    • Lead and promote policy coordination, guidance and other governing documents for using social media in general and for specific tools, working with the Social Media Steering Committee members.
    • Develop and provide an accurate accounting of DHS’s social media audience and reach with procedures to collect and aggregate relevant information, traffic and usage statistics, and lessons learned.
    • Advise the Director of New Media and Web Communication, providing knowledge and expertise in the area of social media strategy and tactics and assist DHS communicators with the use of social media.
