    Job Description

    The Missouri Department of Social Services (MDSS) is seeking a Deputy Director for our Family Support Division (FSD) to provide leadership in the administration and operation of programs designed to provide assistance to families in becoming self-supporting and to maintain or improve their quality of life. FSD administers Missouri’s needs based programs including Temporary Assistance, Food Stamps, Low Income Home Energy Assistance, MO HealthNet Eligibility, Subsidized Child Care Eligibility; Rehabilitation Services for the Blind; and the Child Support Enforcement Program.

    The position, located in Jefferson City, reports to the FSD Director and serves as a member of the FSD Executive Team, participating in strategic and fiscal planning, internal and external communication, interaction with members of the legislature, and liaison activities with local, state and national entities. The Deputy Director will coordinate day-to-day operations on behalf of the Director, representing the Director as needed; provide oversight to the management of divisional initiatives; provide oversight of the following FSD units: Human Resources, Communications, Customer Relations, Compliance, and Quality Control; and supervise managers of the Income Maintenance, Child Support and Rehabilitation Services for the Blind programs.

    Job Requirements

    The ideal candidate will have extensive experience at an executive level in a large agency; considerable knowledge of national social/human services issues and trends; the ability to motivate staff and exact culture and systemic change; and a passionate commitment toward assisting individuals to become self-sufficient and maintain or improve their quality of life. Strong leadership and decision-making skills are critical to success in this position. Candidates should have a passion for best practices and a commitment to collaborative working relationships with partners such as advocacy, provider, legislative, and governmental/regulatory constituents. The successful candidate must have a value set consistent with MDSS’ culture which focuses on results for the people of Missouri; excellence in customer service; proficiency of performance; integrity of stewardship; and accountability.

    The ideal candidate will have, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: social work, human services, psychology, business management, public administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Work experience includes a minimum of 5 years of management and supervisory experience within a public social services agency, managing a complex program at the local, state or federal level, or comparable private sector experience.
