Greetings, The USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region, Los Padres National Forest, is currently outreaching to fill one Visitor Information Assistant. GS-1001-4/5 will be filled at our Ojai Ranger District. Please share this information with those within your network, or with others you know who may be interested. The work is primarily performed in an office setting with occasional visits to other indoor and outdoor environment. The work consists of a variety of duties in the area of information, environmental education, and internal communications. Assists in developing specific objectives for interpretive programs and displays, providing input to the annual plan of work. Inventories and prepares reports on the annual volumes of use, trends in public information needs, and public response to existing information output. Maintains inventory of existing publications. Prepares or assists in the preparation of informational exhibits which include photos, maps, etc. Meets visitors and independently replies, either verbally or in writing, to phone and mail inquiries requesting general information about Forest Service activities, programs, and policies. Knowledge of use and development of public relations tools such as brochures, audio-visual materials, and equipment in order to present information regarding Forest Service programs. Skills in written and verbal communications are needed to give information/education walks, to successfully communicate with visitors, and to assist in the development of written interpretive materials.

FOREST: Los Padres National Forest encompasses approximately 1.75 million acres of central California’s scenic coastal mountain ranges. The forest stretches across almost 220 miles from north to south and consists of two separate land divisions. The northern division is comprised of the very unique Big Sur coastal range descending steeply to the ocean on the west and to the Salinas Valley on the east. It is within Monterey County and northern San Luis Obispo County. The “main division” is unique in being a transverse east-west costal range divided by the Sierra Madre Ridge and draining to the ocean on the south and to the Cuyama valley to the north. It includes lands within San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Kern Counties.
