According to Bob Brewin on Nextgov.com, “The National Park Service plans to accommodate veterans and active duty troops who shine the base of the flagpole at the Vietnam Memorial. But it has asked the polishers to wait until it changes the patina from its original dark brown to a brighter finish,” per Stephen Lorenzetti, deputy superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

I think it’s heartwarming that people want to polish the brass at the Memorial to honor fallen heroes. I’m glad the NPS is embracing the desire of visitors to see the brass shining brightly… and slightly altering the original design.
