    Web Developer (Full-time)

    Sunlight Foundation | Washington, DC

    June 17, 2010 —

    Web Developer

The Sunlight Foundation uses cutting-edge technology and ideas to make government transparent and accountable. We’re a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Washington, DC that focuses on the digitization of government data and the creation of tools and Web sites to make that data easily accessible for all citizens.

Sunlight Labs, the technology branch of the Sunlight Foundation, is seeking a Web Developer to join the Data Commons project. The Data Commons project aims to support the work of developers and journalists, both inside and outside of the Foundation, by linking a wide variety of public data sets and providing a unified search interface and API.

Our team already includes a designer responsible for building out the HTML and CSS, and a database specialist responsible for back-end algorithms and data. The Web Developer will be primarily responsible for building Django applications, including writing views that interface with the database layer, templating the HTML, and adding JavaScript interactivity. That said, most developers at Sunlight Labs are generalists, and above all else we’re looking for strong programmers.

    Required:

    • 2+ years of professional experience in the following areas
    • Front-end web development: HTML/CSS, JavaScript, DOM Scripting, JQuery, etc.
    • Modern server-side web frameworks. Preferrably Django.
    • Experience maintaining, improving and administering live production sites.

    Pluses:

    • Obsessive about web standards, code quality, and maintainability.
    • Experience with data visualization.
    • Familiar with mapping technologies.
    • Involved in the web/tech/open-source community.
    • Experience with front-end testing.
    • Longs for an open and accountable government.

    Employment Information

    • Work from Sunlight’s office in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC.
    • Full-time
    • Competitive salary
    • Sunlight-paid medical/dental coverage
    • SIMPLE IRA retirement plan
    • Generous vacation, holiday, and sick leave
    • Metro benefits
    • Great work environment, with passionate people, lots of collaboration with tech and non-tech people, and lots of community involvement.

Please send a cover letter and resume to [email protected]. Please include the job title in the subject line. No phone calls please. Principals only.
