So Earth Day is coming up in a month. All across this continent, hundreds of thousands of public-sector workers will click on “shut down” as they head out for the weekend, without fully powering down. The screen will be black, but everything will still be in standby mode, consuming maybe 80W…or more, for that period between 5PM Friday, and 9AM Monday.
When you leave for the weekend, reach behind your computer and flick the power switch, if you have one, or simply yank out the power cord once it has completely shut down. It will add a few seconds to your boot-up time when you come back, but that’s it.
Help conserve a couple of gigawatts, folks. Not that hard.
