In April 2014, GovLoop received a Knight Foundation Prototype Award to create two courses for GovLoop Academy, a new platform that offers free, practical and impactful online learning experiences for government employees.
These courses – one on open data and the other on human-centered design in government – are designed to educate both government and citizens about these topics, and provide concrete strategies to implement change.
The courses feature expert interviews from around the country, including:
- Story Bellows, Tim Wisniewski, Andrew Buss, City of Philadelphia
- Catherine Bracy and Ariel Kennan, Code for America
- Joshua Marcuse, Department of Defense
- Harlan Weber, Code for Boston
- Waldo Jacquith, U.S. Open Data
- Tom Lee, Mapbox (formerly of Sunlight Foundation)
Additional insights were provided from leaders at IDEO, Civic Analytics, DataMade, Microsoft Technology and Civic Innovation, New York University, University of Chicago, BETA NYC, Living Cities, Granicus and Hack Baltimore.
“Civic Hackers in Action” describes the role of civic hackers and community activists and describes the impact and importance of open data initiatives.
“The Human-Centered Design Mindset” is an interactive course that shows how government can develop products, services, and policies that put citizens and their needs at the forefront.
