What kind of stress do you have and how do you deal with it?

The phrase “work stress”, although there are some similarities on how it manifested in the workplace, it can mean different things to different people, and comes from many different sources.
Some of the most common sources of job-related stress include:
– Environmental Issues – stress that people experience in the workplace relating to the physical environment in which they work. This type of stress can be associated with workplace safety issues, the configuration of one’s work area, the type of furniture or equipment that must be used in order to perform job functions.
- Uncertainty – People who aren’t sure where they stand in their jobs often experience a high degree of work stress. This issue can be tied to fear of job loss, hoping for recognition or a promotion, or the lack of feedback on one’s performance.
– People Issues – a great deal of workplace stress is related people problems, such as coping with difficult co-workers, dealing with a negative or uncommunicative supervisor, peer pressure, and more.
– Performance Pressure – Feeling pressure to produce a certain quality or quantity of work can be a workplace stressor. This can be tied to project, obliging to policy guidelines, impending deadlines, constant meetings, and other factors.
While there isn’t a single phrase that can sum up what stress means for everyone, the one thing that remains consistent is we all deal with it!

My type of job deals with a lot of unexpectancy and being fast paced. With that I have a lot of deadlines, projects, and managers constantly following up on the status of my work. On the same note, I have so many ideas that I want to do and hundreds of AFI’s (Air Force Instructions) and guidelines shooting down every idea i want to do. My stress is Performance Pressure & of course the obvious in every workplace People Issue’s. Although many people think stress can be negative, to me it the opposite. I actually work better under stress. Mind you my mind will be going at a pace of 90 MPH, I’ll be sending emails three times faster than normal, and writing like a mad scientist, but in the end I get things done! And with the policy boundries, I simply just write and create new local policies… Ah the perks of writing and being in Public Affairs.

Deadlines are always challenging, but lack of clear directions/processes/definitions are the most stressful for me.
How do i deal with it? Sing a song, dance a dance…but that usually stressed everyone else out. So I’ll most likely just refuse to let it get to me. Whenever I get stressed, I take a deep breath, take a step back and think about my current situation in a different, positive way. Life’s too short to let work bring you down. 🙂
Cindy – Sounds like “no” isn’t an answer you like to hear. That’s awesome! That’s an attitude more people need to pick up in my opinion!

My stress is 60% environmental and people and 40% tied into uncertainty.
I share a cubicle and its extremely tight quarters. When my co-worker feels stress, I feel it too. Also, I work with a work team in which we all share roles and responsibilities on an individual level, however there are few if any mechanisms in place to keep people accountable to those roles. This also creates a bit of stress.
Due to a certain degree of involvement from leadership, my job often at times feels uncertain. Being relatively new to my career field, I’m constantly looking for some form of feedback and receive very little. With all of this said, my stress is relatively low. Dealing with the small amounts of stress that do find their way in requires only that I focus on my tasks at hand, and my goals for the week. The pressures and stresses of the week fall perfectly in line with what I am setting out to accomplish, and rather than being deterrents, they become catalysts. Either that or a good happy hour before the week ends!

Uncertainty is about 60% of my “work stress.” Since last year, we have been dealing with a lot of ambiguity and changes–not just in regards to personnel and management, but strategy, focus, communication–it’s a complete organizational re-work. Shifting a culture is bound to have people feel like they are falling in the cracks, especially when it is difficult to find stability in a moving animal. We are all seeking promotion potential, career development opportunities to improve our abilities and quality of work when the funds are just not available. This leads to the other 40% of work stress being performance pressure. Performance is constantly being scrutinized in the work place and with various venues for communication being utilized, it can be quite stressful! It’s difficult enough to monitor your own performance while others are constantly looking over your shoulder to readjust with “hot-off-the-press” policy changes and perfomance appraisal shifts. Don’t get me wrong. Technology is great. However, the push for better communication leads to lots of saturation and a feeling of being overwhelmed or inundated. Email, teleconference, cubicle whispering. You name it, it’s being done.
How do I deal with the stress? I have great working relationships with my colleagues who let me know, empathetically, that I am not alone in dealing with the stress. So, I take it in stride. To keep the morale up and to continue the positive energy that my colleagues have constantly rewarded me with.
I take the time to decompress at home and realize, this is the real life. Nothing is constant, but change. I can either grin at the challenge or melt down. I attribute a lot of the energy to being a young fed with a dedication to public service. I am also in the process of researching books to work on my ability to be flexible and adapt with change. This can be a complete shift in mindset, or it can be challenging yourself with fun things to re-energize the body, mind, and soul. Sounds cheesy? Well, I’m looking into a salsa dancing class right now for some revitalization. You can tell me how cheesy I am when I strut by you on the dance floor!
