Job Duties: The incumbent serves as a Wildlife Biologist and is supervised by the Forest Wildlife Biologist. The Wildlife Biologist supports the Forest and Forest Wildlife Biologist managing, coordinating, or providing technical support to wildlife, vegetation and biological resources and is responsible for participation in the inspection and evaluation of the wildlife program and projects, administers or supports the on-going monitoring of wildlife studies, surveys, and activities to ensure program quality, effectiveness, technical adequacy, and compliance. Incumbent prepares reports of findings or contributes information to reporting. Consultations involve assessment of wildlife resources, species, habitats, environmental impacts, biological evaluations, and related regulatory requirements and compliance guidelines. The Incumbent participates in the conduct of scientific studies and projects, in management investigations, and/or in wildlife resource surveys.

The Forest: The Los Padres National Forest encompasses approximately 1.75 million acres of central California’s scenic coastal mountain ranges. The forest stretches almost 220 miles from north to south and consists of two separate land divisions. The northern division is comprised of the very unique Big Sur coastal range descending steeply to the ocean on the west and to the Salinas Valley on the east. It is within Monterey County and northern San Luis Obispo County. The “main division” is unique in being a transverse east-west coastal range divided by the Sierra Madre Ridge and draining to the ocean on the south and to the Cuyama valley to the north.
