uGov Enterprise Mail Service Termination
October 5, 2009 at 12:35 am #82358
On 1 October 2009, the Director of the Intelligence Staff, ODNI, on advice of the IC-CIO, issued a memorandum directing uGov Enterprise E-Mail system termination. In compliance with this directive, IC Enterprise Solutions (ICES) will begin termination of uGov mail service. Official termination date is TBD. ICES will work closely with the uGov enterprise mail customer community to ensure they have adequate time to arrange transfer of their mail records to other accounts.
uGov Enterprise Email is a robust and flexible enterprise email service that spans the Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, affiliated federal agencies, and partners in state and local government and the academic community. It provides a secure, reliable, and easy-to-use communication mechanism that can remain with an individual regardless of agency or position, and is not directly attributable to a specific organization.
Because uGov Enterprise Email is a single, centrally administered system, it can more easily assure security and proper handling of sensitive information, and provide consistent malware and spam protection in an increasingly challenging IT security landscape. Because uGov Enterprise Email is so accessible and feature rich, it has attracted many government users who previous resorted to relying on external offerings such as Gmail or other ad hoc solutions.
uGov Enterprise Email is based on a commercial off the shelf product called Zimbra, and provides secure access from any web browser on any computing platform, including secure, functional access from mobile devices, as well as native clients on a number of platforms, such as Outlook on Windows. This flexibility and functionality further helps to attract and retain users in a common, shared, secure environment, further enhancing its utility.
uGov Enterprise Email currently has over 15,000 active accounts and services over 1 million messages per week. It provides a significant advantage to home agency email systems with poor functionality or serious deficiencies. In addition to end user email services, uGov provides numerous other services, such as email distribution lists, calendaring, contact databases, the only mechanism to support secure RSS feeds for Web 2.0 services on Intelink-U, and more.
